Six Degrees of Separation - July 23

First Friday of the month, so time for #6degrees of separation, hosted by Kate over at Books are my favourite and best. Each month a book is chosen as a starting point and linked to six others to form a chain. A book doesn’t need to be connected to all the titles on the list, only to the one next to it in the chain.

First book up is one I haven't read

Time shelter by Georgi Gopodinov. From the description it seems to be a book which explores contemporary Europe, with one foot in the past and the other towards the future. It immediately made me think of a book I read last year called……

Grand Hotel Europe’ which explored similar territory. I found this to an intriguing read, and it made me think a lot about the impact of tourism as well as how immigration ebbs and flows. From a grand hotel in Europe to a…..

Glass hotel’ on Vancouver Island, in Emily St. John Mandels haunting and lyrical novel that still lingers with me. Financial fraud occurs in the book, which made me think of….

a whistleblower who exposed money laundering at a Swiss bank, one of the chapters in ‘Rogues’ by Patrick Radden Keefe, another superb work of journalism - I love everything he does. Anyway, from a Swiss banker to a Swiss Nurse in…..

A long petal of the sea’ by Isabel Allende. The Swiss nurse is the real life Elisabeth Eidenbenz whom the character Viktor falls for in this multi generational family saga and Historical epic. It’s an easy jump from a petal to a flower in….

Desert flowers’ by Paul Pen, a thriller about a family living in the Baja Californian desert, where all is not as it seems. And we’ll stay in California and head to LA where…

…’the shards’ takes place, Brett Easton’s Ellis thoroughly entertaining story a serial killer on the prowl in 80’s LA, set amongst a group of wealthy teenagers. Great disturbing fun, told with his usual verve and wit.

And that’s it for another #6degrees.
