Effortless Being by David Bingham

‘Effortless Being’ by David Bingham is a short book at 59 pages but with a message so direct and succinct, it doesn’t really have to be any longer. There’s nothing I can say in this review to add to it, only that if you are interested in discovering your true nature, you should pick it up.

Be Still

Nonduality really is simple. Only recently I was at a service in church, and I was spending time trying to be aware, feeling into the body, noticing sensations and sounds. Of course the mind is at it’s usual tricks - Am I doing this right? How to be more aware? Should I be easing up on attention and on and on and on and on. The mind wants to be in control, always. At one stage I looked up (how seldom we look up) and inscribed on the ceiling above the altar was:

And that is it. Be still, and know that this is God, awareness, spirit, being, soul, consciousness, the universe - call it whatever you want.

Youtube

Because I watch a lot of nonduality videos on YouTube, the algorithm is constantly suggesting new ones to watch. Not every teacher resonates with me, so I tend to skip over a lot of them. The videos of David Bingham have been suggested a few times, so eventually I thought I’d try one.

His explanations of nonduality are just as clear in the written form as they are in his videos. I think the reason why I find him so resonant is that he is so succinct. I had a number of doubts that he was able to clear up and he uses simple language, free of arcane references or complicated terms.

I’ve also heard David mention the Koshas on a number of occasions, so it was good to read about them in a bit more details. I understand them better now. Simply put, we have five layers through which we experience reality - Emotional, Mental, Physical, Wisdom and Bliss. Awareness of them helps to bring us to self realisation.

Davids simple approach helps to point us to the true nature of our effortless being, and helps us to integrate this understanding with our everyday lives.

Summary

I wish I had more to say about this book - it’s clear and concise and I’ve already read it twice. Simply put, we are just effortless being and David Bingham points that out.
