Audiobook Review - The end of the affair - Graham Greene, read by Colin Firth
This is the story of a complicated love affair between Maurice Bendrix and Sarah Miles, that takes place in London in 1945 before ending in 1946. Bendrix wants to know why the affair has ended, so employs the services of a private detective called Parkis to spy on Sarah.
As you’d expect it’s impeccably written and there are some unexpected plot twists. But what I found most interesting about the book were the themes it explored - the selfish nature of love, how love and hate are two sides of the same coin and can’t exist without each other, and our relationship, if any, with God,
I enjoyed Colin Firth’s reading of this audiobook, it always felt that he was properly involved in the story, which always makes a big difference when it comes to an audiobook.
The second part of the book which focused on religious guilt didn’t quite work as well for me as the first half, where I was totally immersed in Greenes depiction of post war London.
